The transfer case input gear (which meshes directly with the idler gear) changed from 34-tooth to 32-tooth in April 1986. 

This change happened simultaneously with Toyota upgrading the transfer case idler shaft diameter from 34mm to 38mm. Consequently, the tooth counts on the mating internal gears had to change to accommodate the larger shaft size and different bearing dimensions.
